Our History

The Midland Liquor Traders association was established in 2019 as a grassroots initiative driven by township liquor traders seeking collective solutions to shared challenges, including compliance pressures , limited access to information, fragmented representation, and restricted economic advancement.

Initially operating as an informal association, the organisation focused on building unity among traders, particularly within Plessislaer area in Pietermaritzburg, where the majority of early members are based. During this period, the Association served as a platform for mutual support, knowledge sharing and engagement with local stakeholders on operational and regulatory issues affecting traders on the ground.

As members grew and the need for a more structured and credible entity became evident, the Association undertook a formalisation process. This culminated in the Organisation being formally registered in September 2025 as a Non-Profit Company (NPC), enabling it to operate with stronger governance, legal standing and the capacity to engage effectively with regulators, partners and funders .

Today, while maintaining strong roots in Plessislaer, the Association is expanding its footprint across the Umgungundlovu District, positioning itself as a unified and organised voice for township and rural liquor traders, committed to responsible trade, economic advancement, and positive community impact .
